Care for your Braces.

A careful patient can eat a nutritionally balanced diet and bring no harm to his braces. We hope that you will strive to be this type of patient. The foods listed below are the ones that we have found to be the most common causes of loose bands, brackets, and broken appliances.

Hard Foods

  • Ice (no crunching, please)
  • Hard edges of pizza
  • Crisp French fries
  • Hard corn chips
  • Peanuts
  • Pop corn (hard kernels)
  • Lifesavers
  • Peppermint sticks
  • Carrots and apples (cut into small pieces)
  • Corn-on·the-cob (sliced off the cob)
  • Ribs (sliced off the bond)

Sticky & Chewy Foods

  • Caramels
  • Taffy
  • Gum
  • Any type of chocolate with caramel and/or nuts

Sweet Foods

Although they may not cause damage to you appliances, care should be taken to brush your teeth immediately after eating very sweet foods. If you cannot brush, at least rinse your mouth out with clear water.

  • Ice cream
  • Cookies
  • Soft drinks
  • Cake
  • Pie
  • Candy

Be a good "brace watcher". Please notify our office if appliances become loose or broken in order that we might minimize prolonged treatment time.

Brushing is important at all times-but especially not that you have braces. Work hard to keep your braces just as shiny as the day they were placed. Then when your treatment is complete and your braces are removed you will be proud to smile... because a Smile Is Forever!

To Brush Your Teeth Properly you must ....
Brush under; above, behind, around all surfaces of every tooth and bracket.

Remember to brush the inside and the outside of both the top and bottom gums.

Rinse your mouth very thoroughly after you have finished brushing.

Be sure to check after rinsing, and if your teeth and brackets are not clean and shining.
.... brush again.
